A group of 20 contestants from the 58th Miss Universe Pageant took a break from contest preparations for a little sightseeing and relaxation on Bimini, Saturday, Aug. 8. The traveling party included Miss Great Britain, Miss Slovak Republic, Miss Puerto Rico, Miss Romania, Miss Estonia and Miss Ethiopia among other hopefuls for the crown. Bimini, actually two islands in the northwestern Bahamas, has been the location for many legendary events from the Ponce de Leon’s reputed discovery of the Fountain of Youth, to the submerged Bimini Road to the Lost City of Atlantis, to Ernest Hemingway’s seasons of writing and fishing off the islands in the stream. The Fountain of Youth was a required stop for the pageant visitors followed by a local reception at Mackey’s Sand Bar. The group also met local artisan Ansil Saunders who has spent a lifetime handcrafting wooden fishing boats. Bimini Bay Resort hosted the ladies for an afternoon on the beach before their return to Nassau and competition preparation.
The 58th annual Miss Universe Pageant is underway in The Islands Of The Bahamas. Participants have been exploring Nassau and traveling to other Bahamian islands - including Grand Bahama Island, which hosted the swimsuit competition on Sunday.
