The Penny Turtle Invitational will be held June 15-19th in honor of Penny Turtle, a woman who has run Abaco Beach Resort’s tournaments for so many years. The tournament’s host, named “Queen of the Caribbean” by Southern Boating, is a living legend and the feature attraction. This unique invitational for her friends and loved ones will include numerous events, all with a truly lavish and vibrant flavor. More information is available at www.AbacoBeachResort.com.

Anglers Abound in The Bahamas

While passionate fishermen are willing to travel to the ends of the Earth in search of the ultimate catch, here’s a little secret - the world’s best saltwater sport fishing is just an hour’s flight off the coast of Florida.

The two most sought after catches in The Bahamas are bonefish, the gray ghost of the flats, and blue marlin, an elusive deep sea trophy fish. Knowledgeable fly fishing guides put anglers on the best spots for the bonefish haul of their lives, and when size matters, deep sea charters are available for offshore big game trolling. More than 50 world record-sized fish have been hooked in The Bahamas - it’s a place where even outrageous fish stories are often true!

For first-timers trying out casting from a pier or deep-sea fanatics hoping for their own world record, sport fishing is definitely better in The Bahamas. Learn more about Orvis in The Bahamas here.

Second Annual Bahamas Orvis Por-AM Bonefish Classic Lures Anglers to Grand Bahama Island

Andros

GRAND BAHAMA ISLAND - Oct. 7, 2009 - As part of the four-year partnership with The Orvis Company, The Islands Of The Bahamas will host the second annual Bahamas Orvis Pro-Am Bonefish Classic from Oct. 21-24 on Grand Bahama Island. Anglers of all skill levels will participate in research, educational seminars, guided flats fishing and special events with local guides and professional fly anglers.

Proceeds from the Pro-Am will support Bonefish & Tarpon Trust in conducting valuable research and educational programs, ensuring that bonefish will be plentiful throughout The Bahamas flats for years to come. Research will include collecting fin clippings for genetic analysis and tagging fish to learn more about life cycles and migration patterns. Participating anglers will work closely with Aaron J. Adams, Ph.D., Director of Operations and Research, Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, to collect the research.

“Research shows that tagging is one of the best ways to gain understanding of the bonefish’s movement and growth patterns,” said Jason Elkins, fly fishing travel manager, The Orvis Company. “We’re looking forward to involving anglers of all skill levels in this impactful effort in a world renowned bonefishing destination - The Bahamas.”

“It’s no secret The Islands Of The Bahamas are the premiere destination for saltwater fly fishing, and our longstanding partnership with Orvis reflects our dedication to both the sport and to the conservation of our fisheries,” said Vernice Walkine, director-general of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism. “The Bahamas Orvis Pro-Am Bonefish Classic provides saltwater fly-fishing enthusiasts an opportunity to catch and release our bountiful bonefish, conduct valuable research and experience Grand Bahama Island in a unique setting.”
